8" X 10" paint on canvas) ...............It is agreed today that characterizations of Mary Magdalen(e) by the Catholic Church as a repentant prostitute or loose woman are unfounded, started by confusing her identity with the unnamed sinner who anoints Jesus's feet in Luke 7:36-50. She's the virtuous female disciple Mary of Bethany, who's referenced in John 11:1-2 had established as the sister of Martha and Lazarus. In apocryphal texts (Dead Sea Scrolls), she is portrayed as a visionary and leader of the early movement whom Jesus loved more than he loved the other disciples. Several Gnostic gospels, such as the Gospel of Mary, written in the early 2nd century, see Mary as the special disciple of Jesus who has a deeper understanding of his teachings and is asked to impart this to the other disciples. Gnostic writings, usually dated to 2nd and 3rd centuries, paint a drastically different picture of Mary Magdalene from that of the canonical Gospels. The Gnostic Gospel of Philip names Mary Magdalene as Jesus' companion. Gnostic writings describe tensions and jealousy between Mary Magdalene and other disciples, especially Peter. 8x10, Finished 12/20/2013 (finished to the edge)

Influences include- Surrealists such as Dali, and philosophy of Picasso (freedom of creativity and expression). Was most inspired in 1996 by an Art show that allowed up-close, inches away viewing of Monet, Picasso, and many others at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, where billionaire, businessman, Republican William I. Koch, of Wichita, Kansas, (with his strong Oklahoma ties) loaned his massive art collection to the museum, in an effort to lift the city’s spirits after the federal building was destroyed by Timothy McVeigh, thanks Mr. Koch.
